HELP Which mtb to buy?

Im lookin to spend $500-650 on a new bike. Need to what to buy. Im interested in getting a cannondale or trek but am open to suggestions. Im looking for a hardtail mtb that I would be able to also throw on a pair of slicker tires to ride on the road or some flat dirt trails, so it would be good if the bike was lighter and pretty fast. Please give me some insight!

Both Trek an Canondale are good bikes with good reputations. It's better to just go to your local Bike Shop and test ride a few. I have a Trek 4300Disc and really like it. It's a great entry level bike. I really like how it's geared and it is pretty light. I like how it climbs. The only way to fall in love with a bike is to take it for a test ride.

Most brands will have comparable offerings in the $500 - $650 range. Buy the one that fits and feels best.

I bought a C'dale F5 for $659 a while back. Now that its the end of the year you could probably find one cheaper.

Redline D440. No suspension = faster on the roads, plus you have the ability to run most 700c road tires.
