If you can maintain a steady cadence, you probably aren't mountian biking.

I like to find a nice steady cadence when I climb. I have found the perfect cadence is what the chairlift is turning at the mountain bike park.

80 rpm, here is the link for more info(of course this varies but it is the number I shoot for as well);

I watch my cadence on the road bike. On MTB I just do whatever it is I need to do to get past the obstacles in front of me. Trails vary so much, and so quickly, that there is no way to maintain the same cadence for very long.

You probably should get the lightest, strongest, most advanced cyclocomputer available to measure your cadence.
