12-23 cassette on a MTB?

I need to replace my cassette on my mtb that is my comuter around Chicago. I on my old 12-28 I found myself almost never ever using the 4 largest cogs, so I am wondering if a road cassette would be good option for me.

Anyone running this? Any issues?

Yes and no.

Road cassettes are common amongst the gravity set. I run one in conjunction with a short cage derailleur.

Are you running that on the 4X, or the SX? Or both?

4X (with a 36T front). The SX is 11-34 with a 32T front.

In low gear, they both climb about the same.

You are an animal! :thumb: I live where there are short climbs and I can't imagine life without a 22 ring. Let alone, no granny ring plus a road cassete. All of a sudden, I feel like a "flower pickin fairy girl"

I don't know about all that - let's just say I'm not afraid to push - it's almost as fast as spinning a granny and I get the simplicity and security of a chainguide without the hassle of a FD and its appurtenant crap.

Most of my local climbs are 1 minute or less anyway so I just try and conserve as much momentum as possible, then stand and hammer.

Easily done! As long as you're running the correct number of cogs [i.e. 9-speed for both], you shouldn't have issues. As gastro mentioned, a short cage derailleur can be used, but your existing derailleur should work fine too.

sweet! I am going to give this a shot.....and what makes me smile is that I found a sram cassette for less than the forte 12-32 I was about to get :thumb:

thanks

I'm running an 11-26 with a 38T up front. It works great for what it's intended for: pointing it downhill and pulling the trigger. It is definitely a beast to trail ride with, though (especially packing 43+ lbs.). Too tall of gears to sit and spin most hills of consequence; but I'm getting a workout this season :).

Gives new meaning to close ratio, About as close to SS as you can get and still have a shifter on the bike:)

Haha! True, I probably don't have a very broad powerband - - but I probably don't need that close of ratios :).

I have a 11-23 on my road bike - I would like that tight of spacing on my mtb, but I would need a 11t granny to make it up some of the climbs I do.
