air pressure for rear shock

I have a new mountain bike, a Trek Fuel 90. It has a Fox Racing Shock for the rear suspension. I weigh 220 pounds. My LBS says to put the pressure at 140 and this is okay because of the geometry. I bounce like I'm on a pogo stick. What is the right pressure?

I'm not sure about the pressure of the Fox, but if you have rebound dampening, it might be set too loose causing the pogo effect.

Congrats on the new bike.

D.G. makes a good point, your rebound may be too fast so this may be causing your pogo effect. Also, try experimenting with different pressures until you find the right air pressure for you.

I believe I have the previous version of the Fox shock so I our air pressures wouldn't be the same but I like the rear to be stiff so I keep the air pressure high.

I would only play with one setting at a time. If the seat is rebounding faster than your body (like it sounds you're describing) then it's definitely the damping. That's the red dial.

Here's some suggestions I was given:

Turn the damping knob (red) all the way in one direction. Then count the clicks until it stops in the other direction. I think mine was around 14 - so count back 7 so you are halfway and start there. Adjust one or two clicks as you ride and find where you like it.

For pressure, start with roughly your body weight, then again, adjust +/- 5psi until you find where you like it.

Good luck!
