The best birthday gift idea for a mtn biker
So a good friend of mine is VERY NEW to cycling and is building a bike. He's the type of cyclist that likes to ride his mountain bike on the road mostly, or light trails. He lives in another state but I'm trying to help him when I visit.
It's his birthday and my girlfriend and I (it's her cousin's husband) want to get him something he'll like. Can anyone here help me think of a cool/unusual or useful gift for about $20 or $30 or so?
I wish I had more details about his bike but all I know is that it was custom made in california, full suspension mountain bike, really top-of-the-line.
I used to mountain bike years ago, but have been on the road for a while just because of where I live. So I feel a little out of the loop with the current gadgets and tools.
Thanks for any suggestions!

There are a couple of things you could get for that price range. You can get him a basic camelbak, if he doesn't already have one. A decent multi-tool could also be had.

If he rides a top-of-the-line, full suspension, mountain bike primarily on the road, he is not a mountain biker. I'd suggest you buy him a book on mountain biking.

How about some books area related that give him some good locations on trails to ride. He might research his way into some more remote trails. At the very least he can spice up his rides by tyring some new terrain to ride. Maybe even get off the road more.

30$ won't get you much...
a set of gloves, maybe? the ones with the CF knuckle protection. of course, if he's riding easy stuff, that might be overkill.
maybe a set of nice tire levers + some chain lube.
maybe a chain cleaner.
maybe a bike computer.
depends on what he has and what he doesn't.

Sign him up for a Red Star here on BF. We should be able to sort him out quickly enough.

custom, FS mountain bike that stays on the road? I'd get him trails maps to every trail within 2 hours of his house. It's free, so you can give him a $20 gas card.

Buy him $30 worth of malt liquor, then after he's wasted you can replace his rear shock with a pice of wood. He'll never know the difference and you will be able to turn a profit on the sale of the shock.

A road bike sound appropriate. Maybe a cyclocross bike so he can handle those "light trails."
Or a Topeak Mountain Morph. Best frame pump I've used.
Or a cheap pair of slick tires. The road will eat up the tires that come with his bike.
