The hardtail or the full suspension?
I just bought a 2003 Sinister Hardtail frame and built it up with a bunch of spare parts I had in the garage. This is going to be my Dirtjump/Play/Urban/Bash bike. So far I really like it. Can't comment on the full squish model.
I think if you're going to train for BMX, I'd stick with a DJ bike. Kona makes some budget DJ bikes. A Specialized P.2 (Closeout or slightly used) would work, as well as many others out there. Realize that $600 won't buy you too much, unless you go used, or do what I did and build it up with spare parts (if you got any).
Good Luck
