you could do it but it would have to be a very smooth course, I ride my cx bike on xc trails sometimes, and the ride is pretty harsh, i dont' think i could do a 12 hr race on my cx where i ride, i don't have the granny gear to spin up hills and goin up hills in a 34t ring up front is fine on fun rides but would take its toll in a race (and you don't have the ss advantages) and i just can't ride fast at all down rough hills ect. If all you have is a cx bike than sure go for it, but if your thinking about using it instead of a mtn bike well it better be a very smooth course.
as far as rules i thought you could, there is nothing saying you can't have a mtn bike with canti brakes and no suspension, old mtn bikes had cantis and people still ride full rigid frames, the only thing to take issue with is the handlbars, and iv'e never heard of any rules about that exept for no bar ends in cx races, and i guess that you have to have handlbars idk

Legal; possible; inadvisable.
. . . unless you just want to do it to prove a point.

I've seen it done. I did not see the fellow at the end of the race. That means one of two things:
1) He was so far ahead of me he was on his way home by the time I finished.
2) Catastrophic fragmentation of his bike.
My personal belief is #1.

A number of local XC MTB races I've been in have been won convincingly on CX bikes.
They tend to favour either smooth courses, mud, or courses that are so chewed up everyone is carrying their bikes anyways (since CX bikes are generally easier to carry).
From a rules standpoint, you'll have to consult individual organizers. Around here anything goes.
