XT Front Der does not spring back. Help

XT Front Der does not spring back. Help
Got a 2006 XT front derailleur and the thing does not spring back. Can't figure out why. Something broken possibly? I took it off and it still doesn't spring back. You have to manually extend it forward and backward. Never seen this before. Help.
Oh, the cable comes up front from underneath the bike BB in a plastic cable router, then slides in between a funny looking piece and comes over the top of the pinch bolt assemble. I have not seen this type before.
Shifters are SRAM triggers
Actually, looks like it's a rapid rise. Still don't know how to adjust.

You've got crap jammed in there somewhere, preventing the thing from moving properly. Hose it down with degreaser, and if that doesn't work, try Liquid Wrench on all the pivots. If THAT doesn't work, buy a new one. There's no such thing as a Rapid Rise front dérailleur.

Did you install it right? Remember, the shifter should be at the granny ring.....when loosening the cable. Then, with pliers- pull the cable end taut(but NOT TOO TIGHT), as you tighten the allen nut again. Also, check the limit screws, and make sure they are not extended. If this all fails to work....then it's time for a new FD.

If there's no spring action while holding it naked (!) in your hands, then something's wrong, like a broken spring. From your description this sounds like a dual pull type- cable can route to the mech. from either below (as in your case), or from above. And, yes, there is no such thing as a rapid rise FD.
When experimenting with the der. off the bike, make sure you are trying to move it in a way that simulates being mounted on the seat tube of the bike. Better yet, mount/clamp it on the seat tube as usual (without cable attached) and see if you can pull the cage outwards.
I don't know if this will really help. If the der. is shot, it's not expensive to replace.

I don't have to be concerned while wrenching naked anymore. Got one 26yo progeny, and it may not be too long before I assume the title 'gramps'.
