im just curious, was downhill as big as it is now before the adoption of rotor/caliper systems? what were the first ones like and when did they come about? did they ever use drum brakes? ..back in the days of big goofy Y framed bikes

My first downhilling was not really 'back in the day' (about 1999); but - - approaching corners, dropping into chutes, etc. was scary indeed with rim brakes. Fortunately, I was not nearly as fast as I am now.

BTW, my first discs were not much better. They were a heretofore not mentioned brand of mechanicals.

I remember burning through a set of new pads on a single ride with an extended descent, likely '96 or '97. It wasn't really a DH per se [Jumpingpound/Cox Hill], but after 6km I seriously considered going with ceramic rims or keeping a drag chute in my seat pack.

I recall being on a ride with some friends, and hearing a huge BANG from up ahead. Coming around the corner, we see buddy is pulling himself out of a shrub, and the rim has been worn down so far on his rear wheel that it has split and punctured his tire. The odds of this happening with disc brakes is pretty much nil...
