Close your eyes and pretend...

...pretend that you're old and out of shape. Pretend that you are a mountain biker that spends more time in the air than spinning circles. Pretend that the word trainer doesn't exist in your vocabulary.

Pretend that you got roped into signing yourself up (peer pressure) to do a 100 mile gravel road ride with a bunch of XC'ers who moonlight on their roadies grinding circles for hours on end.

Do you think you would want more hand positions?

I have a sneaking suspicion that this won't last long.

Haha! Wish I'd had a setup like that when I did the the "mountain bike" leg on the Ski to Sea.

So...after a couple quick rides I have some observations.

1. Too low. I feel like I'm trying to tie my shoes when I using the drop bars.
2. When I'm hunkered over like that...I'm basically supporting my lower body on my jibblets.

This idea was actually ripped off Sheldon's site only he did a standard bar with a raised and narrowed flat bar. The intention was to offer several points to grip over th 100mi ride so I don't get fatigued or bored. Basically designed for comfort which it has sorely failed.

I'm not done with it though. I have several ideas.

My long distance dirt road bike will probably end up with On One Midge bars and ? for controls (maybe even STI's). I may use "road" bb7 calipers to directly interface with the STI's

One of the fastest roadies here, ride a Giant sedona as a commuter/trainer bike. Big tires, and a big chainring the size of a hubcap. He has aerobars and bar ends on it. No one would think twice about that. Two handlebars, on the other hand, and you will ride a big chunk of that 100+ by yourself. HE HE

I think I would prefer more training and less hand positions.

Put the drop bars on over the riser so that the drops curve down below the riser grip.

edit: Even if by some miracle this worked, I still think you will hurt yourself.

Yah...you "boys" don't seem to get my delimma. I don't get time to "train. I get off work and have just a few hours before I put my kids to bed. So out of a 24' day, I see them for 4-5hrs. Throw a 2hr+ ride in there and what do I get? Squat!

I'm gonna be doing some time on a recumbent stationary at night when they go to bed, but that doesn't do anything for my hands/grips and tailbone

I'm pretty-much decided on getting the Space Bar. I really liked it when I installed it on my friend's bike.

I hadn't planned on any 'endurance geeks' hanging back to keep me company, man.

Honestly Ed one long ride a month plus whatever else you can do will get you there. ( you have to get a good amount of the seat time, on the bike your going to ride).

How 'bout this week ?

In all seriousness, Ed - - I might suggest maybe the Titec H-Bars or possibly some Profile aero clip-ons (as suggested above) to your risers? H-Bars:
