trek 930 question
 

I have a 930 trek, first year with the rock-shock i think. can anyone tell me if this is a 1 1/8 or 1" fork. says dia-compe and ahead-set on it. thanks for the help.

I cannot remember. However you can always measure the inside diameter of the stem. Remove the top cap and measure it. Although if you are not knowledgeable in threadless headset adjustments then you could always go here, it will hwlp you in the future.

Chances are with it having a Dia-Comp aheadset and knowing Trek's, it's a 1-1/8", but measure to double check me.

most likely it's 1 1/8th, but it really depends on the year of the frame. 930's were kickass bikes btw =]

I have an old 930 frame I stripped completely and rebuilt, and it had a 1-1/8" headset. It had a chromoly fork on the front, not a rack shock, so that may put it as an older model than yours. I am not sure if this helps. I keep meaning ot post pics of it. It is now flat black with a 9 speed set up, a Judy XC front fork, riser bars, etc. I rode it for a year as a seven speed, and then changed it over this winter. At this point about the only original item on it is the frame. It is fun, not light, but fun.

I did not have any frame issues. The bottom bracket of my frame is 73mm not the standard 68. The rear spacing was your standard 135mm. The biggest frame issue I had was with the rear brake bosses. I put an XT linear brake on the back, and it would not quite fit correctly. I ended up having to tweak the tension bar of one of the caliper arms to get it to sit symmetrically on the frame. However, these problems could very likely be because The frame sat outside for a while and been subjected to who knows what (I liberated the frame from an early demise).

When it was a seven speed (Full STX) it weighed over 30 pounds. Upon converting it to 9 speed I lost about 4 pounds. It rides nicely, though I do not have much to compare it to. I just started riding off road bicycles last summer. I have about a dozen 2+ hour rides on it including part of last years Vermont 50 which was an absolute mudbath. I have not had any problems with the frame and have enjoyed everyminute of building the bike and riding it. The guy I ride with regularly rides a full boinger Gary Fisher sugar 3, and keeps talking to me about getting a new frame. However, I think I will just ride the piss out of this frame until it tells me I need a new one. I really need to post pics of it. I would be more than happy to answer any more questions you have. By the way my overall build cost me about $400-$500, but I think I ended up with a little more than a $400 bike, and the experience of working on the bike has been priceless. I also got to know some of the guys in my local bike shops well ( I am lucky enough to have to good shops near me).



My set up:

Rack shock Judy XC (bike shop deal $50)
Hayes Mechanical disk on front (a necessity as the shock had stripped out brake bosses)
110 mm stem (Bontrageer cheapie)
specialized low rise handle bar uncut (another bike shop deal)
Cheap linear pull/cantilever convertible brake levers
Deore shifter pods
Full deore drivetrain
Deore disk hubs and rhyno lite wheels (unfortunately the bike shop didn't have the black ones on hand, and the silver ones were on special so they are silver)
XT rear linear brake
I have an old specialized body geometry seat on the original trek seat post.
Hutchinson Mosuito tires (fine so far)

Sidebar to this conversation on 930's, I just bought one for my wife to ride in the city. I've been looking for a quality rigid frame/fork for a while. With some thin slicks on it and the rigid fork; I cannot think of a better city bike. It isn't likely to be stolen either.
