Newbie in need of some good help

I wanna buy a mountain bike, unfortunately I'm a newbie and I have no clue what's a good price for a decent bike etc..? what should I look for etc..

what type of riding? where do you live, where will you be riding? what is your budget? Do you want full suspension or hardtail?

I live in Montreal, Canada.
I will ride in mountains and forests, as well as in the city.
My budget is around 500$, and I guess full suspension.

you don't want full suspension at that price range. any FS you get will be a total waste of your money. Some might argue the actual cut-off point, but I say don't bother with FS if you're going under 1000$.
