Bike for college

I will be going to college in boulder, CO next year and I would like to get a raleigh mojave 4.0 or 5.0 or a cannondale f4. Would the cannondale f4 be worth the $1000 price tag versus the 4-500 dollar price tag of the raleigh mojaves?
I have only ridden really cheap bikes up until now ($200 range) and the one I currently have is way too small so I would like to have a good one to start college.
What I am really concerned about is the storage and security for any bike I get. The bike will have to be stored on a bike rack outside and I know that there is a high theft rate of bikes at college. I plan on getting a kryptonite fahgettaboudit lock, but will a thief just take the parts off the bike or destroy the bike trying to rip it from the unbreakable lock? My only other option is to leave my bike at home (30 minutes away) and bring it when I want it, but that kind of defeats the easy access to a bike, especially since I have a small car. Regardless, my bike will be stored at home for most of the winter.
Thank you for the help

I share my dorm room w/ my 3 bikes. Get some hooks and get creative. That said. I have a "beater" single speed bike that I leave outside for the most part. It's to get between classes and that's about it (earlier in the year it was a 15 dollar goodwill bike, now it's a GT SS w/ no seat post ).

Something to consider.

Then buy the cheapest used bike you can find.
NEVER clean it, (except for the chain).
Take can of spray paint to it for added ugliness.
Your objective is to have the least desirable bike in the rack.

College eh? Take it from me, get a cheap beater off of Craigslist. One that'll get you around and won't be stolen cuz if you get a nicer bike it WILL be stolen. damhik

Save the nice bike for home...
