I'm sure this has been discussed before but I found little through the search option so...

Anyone have any good recommendations for some good mud tires? I ride in Oakridge, OR, mostly, which means long climbs up technical single tracks and fast descents over said technical singletrack.

Right now, I'm running a Hutchinson Spider 2.3 in the front and a Panaracer FireXC 2.1 in the back. It's a new rear tire which I think I'm gonna love it once the season gets drier but there are always wet trails here in OR and these just turned into slicks damn near immediately riding Goodman's Trail/Eagle's Rest yesterday. So, let me know if you've got any good suggestions!

The best mud tire ever was the swampthing by Maxxis but they quit making it. Now Maxxis has the Medusa but I haven't tried it yet. It looks a bit like a swampthing.

Best mud tire ever is the Kenda K-Rad and get your butt downtown.

I know a couple of DH title holders that wouldn't use anything but the WetScreams in muddy conditions. Apparently the Maxxis WetScreams are also outstanding over mixed terrain with a lot of "grass" (specifically off-camber high speed cornering over wet grass).

Take my advice as "hearsay." I have no firsthand experience with mud specific tires.

I never had them because even Maxxis-sponsored riders could not get them in the States - - but THE most lusted for, sought-after mud tire in the whole world are the Maxxis Wet Screams. Sadly, they are Euro-issue only (and maybe NZ).

BTW, Pocko, is that what you are thinking of? Swampthing is still current product according to my information.

You're right Dm, I just went to the maxxis website to check. I didn't realise they had two mud tires and wrongly assumed it was the swampthing by the sound of the name. I had a look at the tread patterns and the one I was pertaining to was definitely the WetScreams. The local guys sponsored by Maxxis in NZ were able to get them easy enough... but they were still pretty rare over here. During the 2006 World Champs in NZ I think it rained on final day, and I recall there was a mad scramble for those and only a few had them. Even some of the international big boys couldn't get them.

I live and ride a few hundred miles north of you here in the Pacific Northwet.

I have run Michelin XCR's which are supposed to be all conditions, but they don't have very big/deep knobs so aren't good for much besides hardpack and dry.

My fave for around here in the dirt and mud are WTB Velociraptors. Lots of other riders in these parts like 'em, too. I've gone through lots of sets of these over the years, and just keep coming back to them. Must be something good about 'em.
