Getting the boy a full suspension mountain bike. Entire family has taken up the sport, he is the only one left with a walmart/Sports Authority bike even though he displays the most talent, so i figured i would upgrade him. Called a few bike shops around to see what they had and ran into a Giant/Specialized dealer with a couple of 2008 Trance 2s and Stumpjumper comps in the boys size. The Giant Trance 2 come in about 150 dollars cheaper so i figured this should be relatively easy and quick with a good deal inevitable. However, to my surprize we get there and despite the shop being very busy we have two store employees working with us. Much to my surprize start telling him that the stumpy is a far better bike then the Giant and he will be able to take the hills far quicker on the stumpy than the Trance. Before even riding them he is kinda convinced that the stumpy is the ticket. Me owning one as well did not help the matter at all. So i dont really feel he gave the Giant much of a go. Know it is not the 150 dollars as much as having him get a bike that suits him. Kinda feel that he (17 years old) who is kinda impressionable to begin with, has probably swayed to one when i dont know if that was solid advance or an oppurtunity to move a slower moving product line.
So anyone have any input on comparing these two bikes. I know for 2009, Mountainbike Mag gave the shootout to bikes in the price range to the Giant Trance 2 with the stumpy comp close second. Search on the forum shows pretty decent feedback on both. I was thinking as he likes to hop it and jump (small hits like rocks, humps, etcc,..no extreme air) that the maestro suspension i read so much about my be a better bet. Anyone have any time on these bikes and can provide any type of comparison feedback or pros on cons of either that they would like to share. I love my stumpy, and know he can not go wrong with a stumpy comp, and maybe it is how things transpired that has been hesitating to pull the trigger, but i am surprized that the stumpy comp would get that much more of a glowing recommendation then the Giant Trance 2. The boy took two spins around the parking lot on the trance and got off, rode the stumpy for like 10 minutes which they couldnt determine which size best fit him until they found that they didnt have a large and medium was a far better fit anyway. That really made me uneasy and therefore no bike purchase that day. He is about 5'10" and 17, with probably a little more growing to do. Had a chat with the boy and he said they were both OK, but he probably liked the stumpy better...gave no reason why. Again, any feedback or insight would be appreciated. When I asked the LBS employees why the glowing report on the stumpy compared to the Trance...only response was that though they both have fox shocks, you can lock out the stumpys and they believe that you can take downhilling far faster on a stumpy. This sound right, if so, i am cancelling my subscription to the mags as they are somewhat inconsistent with this. Anyway, would love to hear your comments on the bikes....thanks.
