read through a lot of this thread a just wanted to say THANKS. some of this i do automatically just from riding bikes over the years. other stuff i didn't even think of doing.

One thing I have learned that has helped me out is twisting the hips in the direction I want to go. This works best out of saddle, but can be done on the saddle as well. Cornering ability improves greatly, especially under higher speeds.

Great thread, Aimed right at folk with my skill level.

I have a couple of questions, stuff I'm not sure about.
Quickly, so I get relevant advise, about my skill level, I've had a long period away from cycling, Early twenty's and booze, girls and cars became more important.
My old retired, 20 YO MTB went to that place in the sky where all good MTB's go when they have done their life’s work, and my new, shiny MTB has forks that WORK! how cool is that!
Issue is, when I come up to a curb for example, I lift my front wheel, then My back wheel, I know I have the skill to bunny hop both at reasonable speed but not the confidence, when I lift the front wheel the front forks top out and I get the annoying "bump".
Do I just have to get used to this or am I doing something wrong?

And bunny-hopping out of a rut, Something I have never been good at, Practised today on an easy trail while riding with my 7Yo son, but I feel awkward. Any tips?

^^^ Hey thanks, but, you've got me wandering if I've asked the wrong question?

I ride with SPD's and I bunny hop both wheels at the same time, Is that that I'm doing wrong? What I want to be able to do is hop out of a rut instead of getting stuck in it and crashing and burning.

I can sort of do it but I lack confidence to hop out of a rut in anger (when I really have to).
Should I go back to basics and learn how to donkey kick without SPD's?

Thanks guys.

I tried the bunny hop front wheel then back wheel a couple of times today, How to look awkward! either the front or the back wheel would come of the ground more, could not get it even. F it, I'm back to doing it my way, both wheels at the same time, That I can do and do smooth.
Then I hop up a curb, actually I do it where the curb is lowered for a drive-way and honestly, if it was the curb, and with a bit more effort I would have been good (I hope)
Then I hop a double judder bar, time it perfect, Front wheel just kisses the first judder bar and back wheel just kisses the second!

About 1.8 seconds later the penny drops bigtime. The judder bars are less than the wheel base of my bike apart! If I time the lifting of the front and back better I can DOUBLE the distance I can bunny hop, with the same effort!

Well I know what I need to practice!

Congrats! You'll get it, but don't stress it too much. More fun = more intentional time on the bike = more experience and better riding. It'll just fall in your lap eventually.

There is a lot of helpful information here,
I am getting a bit better, but still have a long way to go,
I made it thru one area of our local trail only off the bike one time after reading through this tread
I basically hiked the trail a year ago

Ed, "don't stress to much" When I'd biking I don't have two screaming kids, No bosses, no **** jobs (today literally), no lawns and no wife (whom I love very much) telling me to mow them.

And you say "don't stress" LOL!

Wow! Look at all these tips. I think this should be my (as well as other noobs I believe) 'bible' in mountain biking. If I internalize all these then it should be easier to advance in no time. Thanx a lot Ed for making this thread! :thumb:

Re: the forks - sounds like your rebound might be set too fast - that could be causing them to top out. Also maybe turn up your compression damping a bit.

This thread is definitely worth reading, and re-reading, but I do have one question. Do you like to keep your saddle high enough for a full leg extension?
