so i did a 30 mile ride with a backpack full of water bottles. oh and it was 82 degrees Fahrenheit, that's hot for Wisconsin, im used to wearing t shirts when its 40-50 degrees.

did it look like this?

i used bleach in mine and basically ruined the liner...maybe the "anti bacterial" lining or something?

i was cautious about not using too much as well. so i will never do that again. i will stick with brushes, denture tablets, lemon juice, vinegar, etc

...or maybe i will start doing the freezer thing too. never dawned on me. i am not the sharpest crayon in the box

hmmmm i just refill mine... never had mold problems.. occasionally I'll rinse it out with baking soda, but most of the time it just sits with water in it.

a little mold should build up my immune system right?

oh, something i suppose i forgot to add (i assumed others did it) is that when i'm done using it, i dry it out with some paper towels or whatever, and then i hang it on the camelbak rack. it just spreads apart the bladder to allow it to dry.

as i said, no problems.

I've cleaned mine using a mild bleach solution. You don't dump straight bleach in there! Bleach( Chlorine) is what people use around here to make their well water drinkable. If you use bleach to clean your bladder, just rinse it out thoroughly.

If I had to guess, you're one of those people who doesnt reuse plastic bottles. . .

For the record, I've had no problem with build up of anything despite not sanitizing for the last 6 months.

I have no problem reusing plastic bottles, in fact i prefer it, but the point is you should sanitize it after your done using it for the day in some manner. My apology's for being familiar with proper hospital grade sanitation techniques, but i dont have any funk in my water and it tastes good everytime.

See, I dont understand it, I did all the "right stuff" (washed and aired out) with my camel back, but with my Dakine, I just leave it as is after a ride, and (I just checked) its doing fine.

It all depends on if it gets contaminated or not, sanitizing whatever your using to drink out of is more of a precautionary measure.

My husband's bladder got funky too. He tried cleaning it, he's Canadian and now here in L.A., he didn't want to part with his Mountain Equipment Co-op bladder; I of course insisted.

If you think bladders are too pricey at REI, there are less pricey ones online but we do like to support our co-op and love REI.

The new bladders are nicer and they do have full cleaning kits with long brushes and what nots specific to bladder cleaning.

I have never "cleaned" mine per se, I do empty it out right when I get in and let it sit upside down in the drainer to drip dry. However, I don't use it as regularly as all of you...yet.

While I am on here and reading this. I have never cleaned my bladder in close to 2 years. I empty the water out of it, sometimes after it has sat for a few days and then put it in the freezer. And just as the other peeps on here have said it does work. In 2 years no strange taste, or smells and so far i haven't gotten sick or died from mold bacteria or spores.

has anyone though of salt water as well? Many kinds of bacteria cannot survive in a salty solution.
