upgrading crank/bb to external type for my 07 Jamis Komodo...recommendations?
My original FSA Alphadrive is getting a little creaky and old. It is a year old and I'm looking to replace it with something new. Definetely want to upgrade to a newer style external bearing type crankset. Looking to spend less than $150...
One thing that I am wondering also is I am looking to gain a few mm's for a blackspire blackguard inner bash ring that bolts to the granny ring to clear the chainstay. my previous setup was a 68mm shell with a 113mm bottom bracket. the inner guard rubbed on the chainstay before I even had it tightened down all of the way, so I may need 3-4mm of additional clearance. Just wondering some good recommendations that will fit my 07 Komodo. |

Just wondering some good recommendations that will fit my 07 Komodo. I got my Shimano Hone 2-ring crankset for about $140 new from some-odd "E-dealer". For the $150 price you're wanting...you could prob. get a Hone or LX on eBay. I know you can get a Deore Hollowtech 2 all day long on eBay for $95. As I already stated elsewhere...I'm running the same frame as you except for the seat tube diam. Mine's an '05 Komodo with the Blackguard and I have ample room...I actually moved mine inward toward the chainstay an extra 2.5mm to give me a better chain line. The external BB style crankset's will fit 68 or 73mm shells. You just insert 2 extra spacers on the 68mm shell. Typically you have 2 on the right and 1 on the left. (mine has 1 on the right and 2 on the left for the chainline) With 73mm shell, you put 1 spacer on the right and none on the left. Hope this helps. |

wow, those are some steals for the shimano sets on ebay. probably going to get it on ebay unless a local shop has a somewhat close price.
anyone running a similar level truvativ set? |
I used to run a truvativ firex gxp set on a SS. It was a turd. Constant problems with the crankarm coming lose as the bolt backed itself out. this led to the bearings getting effed right quick. My fiancee has a firex 3ring gxp on her bike, no real problems, but she never rides, so that's to be expected.
I run an lx, a hone, and a raceface evolve. All have performed admirably. I've heard terrible things about the raceface bb, but mine's held up. either way, i can use shimano or phil or king cups when i replace. not so with the truvativ gxp cranks. you'll love theexternal bb. as ed mentioned, you can more easily fiddle with chainline. installation is a breeze. don't let the shop install them; you can buy the tool for less than they're likely to charge you. the old bb's used to bloody my knuckles regularly. I'll probably never go back to ST or isis or octalink. -rob |
To add to the Raceface BB thing...the Diabolus BB has Phil Wood grease (FWIW) and I've not been able to destroy it. I moved from a Shimano BB to a Diabolus BB on my Shimano crankset.

ed, OP-
I think, after all the backlash with the early external BBs, Raceface started with the phil grease in all of their external bearings. Like I said, I have tyhe cheap one that comes with the evolve, and it's held up fine, even with wet conditions. I've heard the blangin' gold diabolus cupset is better. A buddy of mine has the evolve set, and he's still on the original BB. It's just starting to feel kinda $h!tty, but it's been well over a year of all-sorts use. He got his money's worth. Still, my experiences with the cheapish shimano external BBs will probably lead me to get another set of those when this evolve gives up the ghost. Right now I have xtr cups on my kona; when I ordered my lx crankset back when lx first when hollowtech 2, I hadn't realized that the cups came with the cranks, and all they sold thru qbp at the time was XTR cups. Still, got em mad cheap. I worked at a shop, then. Whatever, i think the bottom line is, I'd avoid the Truvativ external BB cranks for design issues and limited compatability with everyone else's BB. And I tend to love SRAM stuff, in general. I just don't dig those cranks, based on experience -rob |
picked up a brand new shimano hone FC-M600 crankset for 95 shipped! cant wait for it to get here so i can get this thing going. i think im going to also try to sell the 3 chainrings that it comes with since i wont be using them.

you won't get much for em. I'd toss em in the parts-heap.
but, congrats on scoring the hone crankset for such a bangin deal. I love mine. some fret about the triple version not having the pedal inserts, but i've had nary a problem with mine, and i'm a hefty dude. -rob |
I'd ride em! :thumb:

Threading a pedal into aluminum is not quite as stout as threading into a steel insert from the back side. It makes for a more durable interface.
