It was only a matter of time...

I knew that as soon as I opened my mouth about the Hammerschmidt Singlespeed idea I had...someone would build one for me to envy. July's MBAction has a 29er that some dude built as a singlespeed with Hammerschmidt...offering a 2speed SS.
I can't post screen shots until I get home, but the frame is pretty PIMP for an XC sled. Twin top tubes with cable routing and a little X-brace to screw your CO2 canister into so you don't need to keep it in a pack.

I have that issue - don't find the bike attractive at all. The fork just seems so large compared to the rest of the frame. The idea is great, just, the frame design? naa.

Who cares if it shreds? My fugly little crapper with the ugly duckling fork is fun.

I sense envy... :p

They had another "singlespeed" with the HS in a recent dirtrag. The most recent hand-built bike show one.

Really, though, ppl have had this idea since they were running schlumpf 2 speeds with a SS rear end.

To me, it's not really a singlespeed, and there's no way i'm even trying to mess with the HS system until it's been out a few years. It's based on the howwitzer BB spindle, which was always a dog. It's a truvativ crank, which are often dogs. It's planetary gears, which rarely stand up to sustained use under load. Maybe I'm worng--and i hope I am-- but i suspect these things'll have major teething issues.

So, really, as a guy who openly professes his envy where applicable, I don't want anything to do with the bike pictured above, with the noisy dropouts, unproven crankthing, and weird shifter placement. Of all the bikes I own right now, i wouldn't trade any of 'em for that thing.

SSs should be practical. That thing appears, to my eye, to be a finicky $lu+

just my$.02

This hurts my brain.

What could you call it?

Planetary 2 speed?
Internal 2 speed?
1x1x2?

dminor 06-19-09 11:52 AM

Twinglespeed?

I think it's a thing of beauty, RICO.

If you could take this design and apply it to a Banshee Scirocco with a PIKE and have a 2-speed planetary light/tough bike...what's to hate?

RIC0 06-19-09 01:12 PM

It would have to grow on me brotha, I'll give it some time. lol

ed 06-19-09 01:23 PM

I can see why some would hate it. Sit'n'spin'ers, people who climb 5000ft on a ride...us Kansas weenies would do well widdit though.

They don't make a smiley for how hard I laughed at that one!

dminor 06-21-09 12:26 PM

When it comes right down to it, I think something simple like the Envy Double-e2 will probably be my Hammerschmidt.
