i'm a short guy, so... side lift.
(unless i'm riding my folder which has no top tube. i just step right over the thing.)

i usually mount from the left, so...

have left pedal at 12, 11, or 10 position. clip in left foot. my weight causes the crank to turn, thus propelling me forward. I then swing my right over the back wheel and clip in at 12 position on the right.

i do this on both my road and mountain bike.
