Anyone else have this happen with egg beaters

While I am hopeful this was just a freak defect in the individual pedal, has anyone else had this happen with an egg beater pedal? I recently installed a new pair of Crank Brothers egg beaters to my Mtn Bike and went for a short ride on the roads around town to get used to stepping in and out of the pedal....(had used spd's) After going only about 2 miles from home, as I was pulling up on the right pedal, my foot slipped off... At 1st I though I might have just unclipped, but when I looked at my pedal, the body of the pedal was still clipped to my shoe and the spindle had snapped....... see attached picture........ My first though was "Oh S#*^... That would have left a mark if it happen on a fast single track"....

Like I said at the start, hopefully this is just a freak accident limited to this one pedal........but I wanted to hear from anyone else has had this problem before putting a new set back on my bike.

That might be how you grease the bearings, but, if not, it looks like it sshould screw back on. Either way it is not supposed to do that when riding..

Your right, they do come apart to lube the bearings, if you look closely, you can see where the spindle snapped......... when I pulled the end cap, the screw and nut fell out with a 1/4" portion of the spindle still attached.

What model are they? Are they the Eggbeaters C? I have an older pair of Cs but that never happened to me. I did break one of the wings off of a pair of Candy SL pedals I had, though. It was rideable though as I could still clip in on 2 sides. Crank Bros did take care of me and completely rebuilt my pedals, which were way out of warranty and way beat up.

Call Crank Bros, they have excellent customer service and will take care of you.

Well the good news is I have spoken with customer service at Crank Brothers and after emailing a photo of the broken pedal, they have given me a return authorization number and will replace the pedals........ They also told me that this is very unusual, and the guy I spoke with had not heard of it happening before. I guess there was just a weak spot on this particular pedal spindle that let go....... either way, they are replacing the pedals with no round around and I can't ask for more than that.

I downshifted, locked out the Float, gripped my wide-az$ bars, threw it into GNAR-MODE and...

I thought I broke my chain, but I looked down and all I saw on the end of my crank arm was 1/2 of my spindle and some leg hair and skin.

I got mine completely rebuilt in about 1.5wks for free. Good CS. I'm having my doubts with the quality of CB stuff though. I have an Iodine C headset that is a "surface rust" magnet just by sitting on a humid porch. No direct water contact. I'm gonna have to paint the dang thing to keep it healthy.
