Come on guys.. we need to revamp this thing... how many times can the same questions be asked? I like this place because I can posta thread like this.. but I have been driven away with the same questions time and time again.. well guess what.... IT's TIME FOR A CHANGE!
Rules...
1. We are happy to answer anyquestions that you have
2. BUT you MUST AND I MEAN MUST give us a post ride thread
3. Must include pic of bike/ride/terrain whatever in previous rule
4. If you ask questions about multiple bikes fine.. but if within a month you do not purchase bike.. then said threads should DIE and none will be answerd until you post a thread about actually testing a bike be it borrowed/ rented/ or whatever..
If anyone else can think about more rules please add them on starting with the next number in the order...

Except for number 3 I agree (I still don't take pics). I would love to hear more about peoples first experiences on the trails. Pictures. See more of what people ride all over the country even the world.

I would rather hear about a newbies first riding experience over some dude telling me how he hucked off of the JAW drop.... BORING....
but a newbies ride experience threw their eyes, is like a babies view on the world.. so fresh... so invigorating(spelling?) it makes me then want to ride more and push myself more so I can find that "new experience"
Come on guys, I know we can all do it!
You will all get my first WA ride write up when I get there along with pics (not of me, but of the ride)

This happened probably a couple months ago, but it is my newbies first experience. I bought a Gary Fisher hardtail after thinking about it for sometime. My boy mountain bikes so I got something that I could use to go ride with him. The LBS put an upgraded seat post on it and swapped out the stock tires. They pretty much set it up the way they thought they should. I’m a roadie I don’t know much about mountain biking. I told the shop to use their judgement just stay within budget. The bike was ready at noon on a weekday so I took the afternoon off and went and got the bike.
It was a nice day and I had a new bike so I wanted to ride it. I went to a mountain bike trail not far from my house that is a 17-mile timber trail around a lake. 17 miles is not a very long ride on the road but, I underestimated the time it would take to do 17 miles of trail. Well, all I took with me was the 2 spare tubes I bought when I picked up the bike, a frame pump ,2 water bottles, and a helmet. No patch kit.
Thorns are really hard on tires aren’t they. After 10 miles I had went through both spare tubes and I was 7 miles from the car. It took a while to carry the bike back through the timber. It was getting late and I had no food. I ate some berries off a mulberry tree. That helped, I have diabetes and I was afraid I was going to crash my blood sugar. I went off alone. I think I was the only one on the trail. A tornado had recently went through and there were a lot of fallen trees. One caught me by surprise because I went up over the hill and then I almost did a header over the tree as I started the decent down the other side.
Ticks and bugs were real bad. I didn’t use bug spray either. I hope I don’t have lyme disease. I had several ticks on me when I finally got home. The wife wasn’t happy because I put my tick infested clothes in the family laundry hamper.
It was a great time. ( Till about the last mile of the walk to the car. ) I shouldn’t have been such a newbie I was raised on a farm in that country. I used to hunt and fish there since I was a child. I just went off half-cocked and unprepared. With the diabetes I probably should not have went off alone or at least not without taking any candy or glucose with me. But everything was fine and it was a great workout. I do want to find a low cost way to make the tires more thorn-proof that isn’t going to cost a lot. Might try a combination of thorn resistance tubes and slime.

I always bring food with me, be it a bar or fruit or whatever.. I never plan for a long ride, but man somedays I just have so much fun they end up being about an all day event.
Just it's so easy to forget about everything you have to do when the only thing on your mind is one pedal in front of the other.. or DANG that was a big log I just got over. Well I guess there's always the OUCH too.. haha
Personally I'd stay away from the slime.... just a hassle in my opinion, even though there are alot that swear by it.
What kind of tires do you have now helps figure out why you are getting the flats (if they are super thin xc tires or something)? I got some heavier thicker tread/walled tires (DH style actually) and I used to get flats like that all the time. But now I don't get any...not a single one in the two years I've owned it. BUT they are heavy as hell!
Also another option you have is tire liners...
Not to cheap usually run about 30-40 bucks.. but again it's an option.
So what do you think? after you'd been out your first time, did you look forward to getting back on the bike? Are you hooked on mtbing?

ok.. just to post a few pics of some rides a while back...
Super rainy day.. freakin tornados all over the place I guess while I was out riding... haha.. no wonder there was no one out on the trails that day. Well I had tried to get a bunch of guys to go riding, all said they were in. But of course at the last minute everyone bailed. So I figured I'd do the same.. but then as I walked outa work and saw my bike in the bed of my truck, it all changed. The temp was great! Not raining right then, and just had a great calm like I new it would be a great day.
So I took my chances... went to the trails and guess what.. had one of the most amazing rides ever! I haven't solo'd in a long time and wow it was amazing to do it again. I was thinking the trails would be so muddy that I couldn't even ride. Gotta love IL clay. Anyways, as it happend.. the trails were perfect! Water was sitting on top, but the trail surface was amazingly hard. Nothing better than feeling warm water spray against you as you pedal so fast and so hard threw the single track. The branches hit your face keeping you realizing this is actually real. "I'm here alone having one of the best rides ever... is it real?" Well luckly everyone else missed out on this day, and I didn't.
So anyways here a few pics...

One thing I am glad of, I don't seem to be in an area with thorns. I don't get many flats except from rocks.

Yes I’m sort of hooked. I haven’t been putting many miles on my road bike lately. I’ve been riding the mountain bike even on the road. Trying to get a good for the bike before I put SPDs on it. Right now I’m riding the stock platforms.
I would like to stay away from the slime. I think if it would fail then it would really be a mess to have to change out tubes.

Gee, has anyone noticed SLC is SUPER excited about heading to the PNW and doing some riding?
BTW, I'm thinking about using your pic of the muddy chain as my desktop. Whatcha think?
I'm NOT excited these days. Divorce SUCKs and I don't get to spend a whole lotta time with my son. Wish I could win the lottery and never have to work, so I could spend day in and day out with him and/or riding.

Those are some great perspective shots SLC.
And a2 he is dang excited. Can't wait to get out here and ride 20 minute downhill runs

YES I'M EXCITED... hell we've been planning this for what? over a year, just trying to get everything in order has taken forever, figured most people were sick of hearing.. yeah it's gonna happy... just a bit longer....
WELL the TIME IS HERE... lol
and I really just want to get some more ride threads going in here honestly, so I'm hoping my intensity for all that shows threw and gets some of these guys out riding and posting pics. Always awsome to see other parts of the country/world!

Try Avernir thorn resistant tubes. The things simply DO NOT puncture!!!! I'd estimate that they're 3 times thicker than a "regular" tube. They come in a box thats fit for a tire. But unless your riding over a bed of nails ... they do NOT puncture!!!! At $5-$10 depending on the shop, it's a real steal.

This is from a ride that lasted about 4 hours.. maybe slightly less... and this was the first time I met/road with this guy... oh and to boot it was the 4th time his girl was on a bike and she lasted the whole time!
Here's Ken rippin it up down a short little section that was super steap and loose!
Oh and so sorry for the HUGE pics! Just to much work to resize them... eh, what else do I have to do? Yeah, I'll resize em, but in the mean time at least you can look at these... Oh and check out the vid clip too
