Ok, you're already typing "Get a hardtail instead". I got it. But here's the deal:

https://www.wiggle.co.uk/p/Sale/26/Gi...08/5360040768/

I ride a cyclocross and it does almost everything: commuting, touring, offroad, light MTB. The only thing it sucks at is rough downhill and jumps. I don't think I'm going to do much of that stuff, but it would be fun to do a bit. Obviously I don't want some Kmart POS that will break, but this one looks ok - just with fairly low spec components. The one thing that bothers me most is the mechanical disk brakes, but you can't have everything.

Terrible idea? My plan was to ride it for a bit, see if I really get into it, and upgrade components as they wear out if so. There's no way I can justify springing $3k+ (Aussie dollars) for a "good" dual suspension. And I don't want to get a hardtail because I don't think I'd ride it much. As it is, I'd be surprised if I spend more than 5 days a year on this. (Maybe I should just hire...)

It's a decent bike. Not bad, how much is it?

The price doesn't show up for you? $830 AUD plus $120 AUD shipping, so $950 AUD - $750 USD. (Bear in mind bikes in general are more expensive in australia. (Examples: https://www.freedommachine.com.au/sho...p?Category=175)

I believe that's supposed to be a decent bike for the money. No first hand experience though, so take it for the (little) it's worth. I'm wondering though, if you've thought at all about a freeride or AM hardtail, along the lines of a Norco Sasquatch or Jamis Komodo, or a build around a Azonic Steelhead or Banshee Scirocco?

OP-

The Giant Yukon FX is pretty much regarded as the winner in the $1000 or less full suspension category, at least around here. Get it.

Hmm, now realising there's an FX1, FX2 and an FX3. More complicated than I thought.

Ok, well, as my signature shows - I did it. Haven't had a chance to take it for a long ride yet, but plenty of fun to bounce around on, go down a few steps etc. Feels sooo heavy going uphill, but I guess any FS bike will compared to a cyclocross...
