Actually I just planned to use them for the annual 122 mile death ride in Marklyville. It's all pavement. Starting to think I can get away with using my semi-slick cross tires now. I can average 20mph on flats with these and still hit the trails.

Get the same hubs, get narrowish rims (19mm will let you fit a 700x28) and spokes, and build up your own wheels. You should be able to do so for approx $200 or so, with XT hubs.

Whats the narrowest slick tires you can get on your current rims? If you can find a par of narrowish slicks on your current rims, you could bypass the whole buying new wheels thing.

You can spend a couple hundred bucks on a decent older used road bike and it'll still ride and work better/faster as a road bike than some mtb/road bastardization.
