Dahon X500 vs. Montague Paratrooper which folder?
Newbie question here, thanks in advance for the help!
I'm looking for a foldable mountain bike and have narrowed the search down to two models: a) Dahon's X500 which is an economy version of its foldable Zero-G mountain bike (this one was just launched in 2004 and seems to be only available outside the US for some reason - anyone care to gues why?) and b) Montague's Paratrooper.
First, I would be grateful for any comments on the logic which led me to the two models:
- Needed a bike that basically replaces a horse/mule for camping, fishing, hunting, enjoying the outdoors, etc. So it looked like only a tough, knobby tired mountain bike would do (please tell me if I am wrong).
- Budget is around US$500-700.
- Needed a portable bike that could be easily carried on planes, buses, trains and packed in car trunks. My budget wouldn't allow any fancy S&S work on a regular bike, so it looked like only a folder would work.
- I'm big (there are other words for this!) with a high center of gravity. Six foot two inches and around 270 pounds. So it looks like 26 inch wheels.
Please let me know if my thinking that led me to the Dahon and Montague is flawed.
Secondly, what are the pros and cons between the two in terms of component quality, ride quality, and value for money?
Thirdly, I will probably be riding in lots of strange places overseas. Which bike would be easier to repair/source parts for?
Any and all comments/advice anyone has would be much appreciated!
Again, thanks in advance!
