How much to pay for used Hardrock?

There's one in supposedly "mint" condition on my local Craigslist for $120. The ad reads:

This bike is like brand new and still has original specialized tires. 18 speed, 16'' frame.
I can't find anything that matches it exactly on the archives section of the Specialized website, so I'm guessing it's from 2001 or earlier.

I'm not looking to do anything really serious with it, mostly just riding around my neighborhood, and occasionally into the city. The last bike I owned was a Specialized Rockhopper with 24" wheels, that I got when I was maybe 12 years old or so, and I haven't ridden in about 10 years.

It is older than my 1999 Hardrock I paid $15 for, if that gives you an idea.

Ok, I'll keep that in mind. I've emailed them asking how firm they are on that price...I spoke to them before that, and then looked up completed ebay auctions to get a feel for the going rate. Hoping they're willing to move on that price.

For reference, how will this likely compare to my old Rockhopper? I got that used sometime in the mid to late '90s.

Probably that is from the mid 90s, 1994. I think that is in infact a 94 since bikepedia says that is the only year that used a 6 speed rear.. freewheel.. not worth 120. It sold for around $270, give or take. It was a step below the rockhopper.

I talked the guy down to $60, but right after I started heading over there, he called and said someone else was interested (and I'm guessing, willing to pay more), and to not bother coming by. Oh well...guess I'll keep looking.

What else would be comparable or maybe a little better, that I might be able to get for under $100? Rockhopper? Trek 800? Anything else?

I don't know - depends on what someone has and what they know or don't know what it's worth.

I do some bike flipping. If you were to ask the folks on the C&V forum about that Hardrock they would tell you a nice, rigid fork MTB from the 90's sells for around $100. Some areas are higher and some are lower, but that's a good benchmark price. IMHO, the original price was not out of line. However, for $100 you should expect to find a perfectly good working bike, with little or no rust. When I decide to sell one it needs no repairs or adjustments.
