    whats a good upgrade?

I have a 2007 Specialized Rockhopper base model. I got it brand new in 07. I already upgraded to Panaracer Smoke/Dart tires and are very very happy and forte terramax wheelset and tektro io mechanical discs. very pleased with the brakes and wheelset. after a 30 min tune session the brakes work as well as BB5's but half the price. Anyway I was wondering what should be upgraded next. I have an alivio rear derailleur and was thinking of going deore or deore xt but idk if it would make much of a difference. then i was thinking about the fork cause i dont like the dart 3 but i dont have a lot of money to spend. i plan on racing the bike but i still dont know what to upgrade. i would like to spend under 250 so that rules out the fork but what are some good ideas? thanks.

    1-Fork Upgrade
+1, I have a basic 05 Rockhopper. I've upgraded the derailers to LX, the shifters to XT, the V brakes to XT, both rims to Mavix 517s, and the fork to a Fox F-100. The change that had the most impact by far was the change to the F-100. I bought it used off of ebay for about $225.
The second best improvement was changing the front derailer from Alivio to LX. I hardly noticed the change to LX at the rear derailer, but the original equipment derailer was a Deore level and performed well. The third noticable improvement was the change to Mavics. The original equippment Alex rims are a little on the heavy side.

Fork would be a good upgrade. I would look for a Marzocchi MX Pro with ETA. I upgraded a bike with one a few years ago and it was a great, durable fork. You can find them super cheap at the various mail-order sites You can find them with v-brake studs as well. The derailleur can be had for cheap. Go XT. You will notice a difference

My Trek came with Alivio derailleurs, I upgraded to LX and it was a decent change.
    shifted a good bit better.

I would definitely go with a fork upgrade. It makes the whole bike feel better. got rid of a crappy Suntour fork that came with my 3900, and put a manitou Splice Comp on it. Rode a lot better after I did that.
Ebay and craiglist have some kickin' deals for forks. you can get a decent fox, or a higher end rockshox fork for under 300.

Go clipless! I got m520 and shoes last weekend and test rode them today and let me tell you - this is by far the best thing I upgraded on my bike. It's really awesome. Cannot wait for a weekend to get to trails
