yes this could have been over at the clyde syde but it is a MTB question...

budget $1,500.

wanting a 29 rigid rear...

looking at 2010 Specialized Rockhopper... was reading another post a little bit ago and was linked to Jamis' site nice stuff there...
.
I guess my question is this good strong frame/best comps for the money... frame would/could have to be upgraded later if need be...

After seeing your post, I wanted to see what kind of 29er I could build. On JensonUSA and Greenfish Sports, I took a Surly Karate Monkey 29er steel frame ($465) added a Shimano LX complete build kit($499) with BB5 discs, and added a Rockshox Reba SL 29 Dual Air fork ($418). The total came to $1433 w/free shipping on everything. The frame comes with a rigid fork and you could sell it to recoup some cost, or keep the fork in case you ever wanted to try going rigid for a while.
You could wrench the bike yourself, or see if someone would build it up. You might be able to slide in the total to right around $1500 and have a sweet bike. I think everyone agrees that Surly frames are indestructible, especially for a guy your size. Shimano LX is not super luxury, but still quality goods. The Reba SL is a fantastic fork, and you find it on much pricier 29ers. Just a thought...

only one problem with you 'build set' n00b... to add 29 inch wheel set it is over $700...
that build set is for a 26"...
it got quite spendy quite quickly

With your weight and size, SRAM Tora air fork is a great choice. Most non-air forks can't handle more than 200lbs. At 300lbs, I'd stay away from the Reba fork, esp if it isn't a 2009 version.

i'd rock it rigid, and get a fork down the line if it seems necessary. but then again, i'm a rigid-type, so whatever. either way, if you're large, get steel and spend the components money on the wheelset. The wheelset will take most of the weight-related abuse, and cheap wheels will fold under pressure. plus, and i know someone will moan about this, but all other things being equal, 26" wheels are stronger than 29" ones...
you can get cheeep groups on pricepoint, but it's all sram, if you like sram. I weigh @250, and i roll on a steel 29" singlespeed. Got some cheap surly wheels built up with some wtb dualduty freeride 29ers, and they're true as can be. pretty cheap, too, like, under $250. building the same with shimano hubs would be cheaper, but less strong, due to dish...
