Is buying used wheelsets a good thing?
Sometimes a new high-end wheelset can be too $$$, so buying a used set of quality wheels make economical sense. But there's risk involved. So do any of you guys recommend buying used wheels?
I recently got a set of Mavic XC717 w/ XT M756 disc hubs for $75. The thing is that there are a number of nicks and scratches on the rims but nothing deep or big, just scratch here and there throughout. The rear rim has two very light indentations near the lip (doesn't look bad). The hubs look clean, though the rear seems to have a bit of a drag. Both wheels seem straight and true though. In the ad, seller said they were hardly used and in very good condition. From the pics in the ad the wheels looked clean and sharp, and the seller said they were not used very much. When I went to check them out I was a bit disappointed by all the nicks and scratches and peeling stickers that suggested either heavy and hard use or more mileage than originally stated. I was gonna pass but I ended up getting them down from $125. Think I got a deal?

It sounds like you got a great deal as long as they're reasonably straight. The M756 hubs I've owned have needed an overhaul right out of the box. Some fresh grease and a proper cone adjustment will have them spinning trouble free for some time.

i would buy used 'cause i'm poor. esp. if it's a good deal.
i wouldn't buy anything carbon used. having said that, i'm being a slight bit hypocritical as i bought a Trek 1.5 earlier this summer that had a carbon fork and seat post. I'd stay away from CF parts being sold separately. You don't really "upgrade" from CF, just downgrade / replace.
