ok i am doing mountain biking for my senior project and i told me teacher this and he said to pick something more specific (sp?) like mountain bike racing or downhill or cross country, could you guys give me some options o and by the way i live in the mountains in asheville north carolina.

Define "doing mountain biking". Are you writing a report? Are you building a display? What is the end result that you need to deliver to your teacher in order to get a good grade?

Your teacher's point is worth considering. I understand what s/he is getting at. If you are writing, say, a 10-page report, then you'll have a more interesting report if you narrow your topic so that you can use those 10 pages to go deeply into it. If you try and cover all of mountain-biking in 10 pages, you'll barely scratch the surface of the various facets, and you'll probably not end up telling anyone very much they don't already know.

Sometimes you can get interesting results by tightening your focus well beyond what you first feel is reasonable. 10 pages on mountain-bike crank design could prove to be very interesting. You could even focus on handlebar grips. That might seem absurd at first, but it really isn't. Believe me, there's an awful lot behind even the simplest of products. I once read an entire book on the history of the pencil. Narrowing your focus forces you to really dig in, and then you are likely to come up with a report or presentation that will give your audience a new appreciation for something they once thought mundane.

Do a map project!

Find as many trails in the area as you can, ride them each a few times and take notes on your water/powerbar breaks. Take pics, maybe some video if you can get an assistant or two. Make a map of the trails and put the videos and pictures online or just on a CD. Done!

Research: check
Writing: check
Physical Deliverable: check
FUN???: definitely a check!

Plus, as a bonus you can make a bunch of copies of the CDs and hand it out to the bike stores. Or put it online and start up a local MTB trail website.

There are a million topics on this. A search should yield some names for you. All the bikes at that price range will be similarly equipped. Try out as many as you can and see what fits you.

go to a bike shop ride the bikes under 600 dollars and pick the one you like the best. Come back here copy and paste the techniques for new riders and call it a day. Or summarize if you don't want to plagiarize.

That's your topic??? You need a technique with ANYTHING...is that really going to be enough? And it's not so much that you need a technique to ride, either. You can have one or not, doesn't really matter you'll still be able to ride either way.

That saying is not mine at all, it does not belong to me. In fact you're the one who said that, so the saying really is yours. If you wanted to be safe, you'd not get on a MTB at all. And I'll second the notion that your senior project would be more interesting and beneficial if you were to do it on grammar, punctuation, or logic.

Take it easy, no worries, bud! Some here are just joking with you about the grammar thing. Just laugh with us! No big deal.

You need:

1) Help finding in a new mountain bike.

2) Help writing/researching about MTB riding techniques.

Here's what I suggest that you do:

Ride a bunch of bikes and decide on one that you like, then buy it. Go start riding it and begin the learning process. Come back here and ask questions about things you're discovering/learning. Go ride some more, come back here again. Ride and repeat.

Follow the above and I guarantee that you'll be learning stuff about technique that will apply/help with your project. Actually going out and riding is going to tell you a lot more than just what folks have to tell you here.
