There is plenty of benefits to both. Buying stock is the easiest way and you can ride right away, And then change whatever parts you want to change as you go. But if you do that you should factor in extra cash for extra parts to get exactly what you want. I like building bikes (I should mention I build older bikes, I'm just getting into full suspension, threadless headsets). I get an enormous amount of satisfaction from riding a bike I built and I know it on a personal level. I have as much fun building bikes as I do riding them. But you might not end up with exactly what you thought you would when it's done. I like the idea of finding a cool bike in a shop that you like and using that for a blueprint with your own pieces on it. I think if you have the patience to build you own then you would be a lot happier with it in the end. That's my opinion.

I built my self a SS/Fixie last year and I hardly ride it, it just sits on my wall looking pretty, but there is a definite attachment to the bike, a lot more than my road or mtb. So I am sort of looking forward to that feeling. Which has me leaning in that direction.
