2007 Trek Fuel ex9...possible diet time.. any suggestions?
 

I have this exact bike

except I downgraded my RD to an X-9 after I broke the X-0 into pieces and upgraded the shifters to X-9

so are there really any components that are known to be heavy?

it weights 30.5 lbs with pedals with are time Z pedals and are 530grams

most of the stuff is pretty light. what wheels u running?

That's not a heavy bike. It's not made to be an XC weenie. Don't sacrifice the durability of the bike and turn it into a pansy.

I probably shouldn't mess with it... just got the upgrade bug recently.... wanted to add some bling but maybe i'll jsut tossed on some sealed gore ride-ons and be done with it

Nice bike, a pound or two is all your going to be able to save. Probably wouldn't even notice much difference. I agree with Chelboed.

thank you it is certainly an amazing ride... I came form a Haro 8.2 escape which was great for me but a little too small too

I love my Trek not to say it;s the best bike out there but it has treated me very well.... be a tough sell to not buy another when I replace it.... basically when I break it

I will probably not mess with a good thing just swap out the cables with the gore ones unless there is something comparable in price and better performing?

I'm not familiar with the Bontranger wheels but I just upgraded my rear hub to something with a finer ratchet (quicker pickup when initially starting to pedal) and really noticed a difference. My budget however is lower than yours and I upgraded a bottom of the line Shimano hub to an XT. For you, how 'bout a pair of Industry Nines?

...it weighs over 30 pounds? Is it an XL, or something? Sure your scale is correct?

Judging by what I measure for my bike's weight and what others claim (both here and the road bike forum) I've come to the conclusion that the earth's gravitational field must be much more pronounced under my home than it is elsewhere on the planet.

I ride an 04 Trek Fuel that has been modified/upgraded much over the last few years. Odly enough, the "perfect" setup for me has my bike spec'd a lot like yours. I find the SRAM X.9 to be the sweet spot on the X.x lineup and I run the shifters and rear der. I run an XT in the front and an XT crank same as yours. I run a 990 cassette in back and BB7 disc brakes. I had the stock Bonte wheels but needed more beef as I am a clyde. For this I built up a set with XT Hubs, Wheelsmith spokes and Velocity VCX rims and love them. This bike has been a flawless racer for me and takes a ton of abuse. It finally made it to this current state after years of abuse and breakage(started as a 2001 Fuel) both front and rear triangles have been replaced twice under warranty from Trek and I have finally found a component mix that I cannot destroy in one season.

Long story short. the durable bike I've ended up with is quite similar to yours. If I were in your shoes, I would just ride the snot out of it and any neccessary upgrades will reveal themselves to you.
