How'd I do?
 

I've been back into road biking for almost 4 years now and I wanted to get back into mountain biking as well, but on the cheap. A road riding buddy sold me his '07 Ironhorse Maverick 5.0 for $100. It's a tad big for me (that seatpost had to come down a good 6") but it will do, and I gotta put flat bars and bar ends on it... is it just us roadies that have a dependency on parallel handles for climbing?

As a roadie-turned-mtber myself, I don't use bar ends, but that's to (help) keep me out of trees.I need all the help I can get.

Keeping you out of trees? Come to So Cal, we really don't have trees in the semi-arid and desert areas. Just tall, dead grass. Good luck finding shade, though.

I like the scenery of the trees, though, when I'm not running into them. Don't complain about not having shade - you also don't have winter to deal with.

True, but when a 100 oz camelback runs out on a 4 hour ride and you have sunburns because it's hard to apply sunscrean over sweat and dirt, you realize that there is a trade off.

Reminds me of the death ride in the flint hills of Kansas. 95-105, no shade, no conveineince stores and core temp just keeps rising till your driven to huddleing under a sapling for what little shade it provides. It's like survival instinct takes you to an animal level. Ah Good times!
