09 Trek Top Fuel 9.8 trail capabilities?

I was planning to test ride an 09 Trek Fuel EX 9.8 today because my local shop was blowing them out. They were all out of my size but they offered to match the Fuel EX 9.8 price on an 09 Top Fuel 9.8. I gave a little spin around the area and if felt great. Super light and responsive obviously. There was no real option to ride on a trail and they do not have a demo program so I am wondering how well this bike will perform for an average rider? I've heard the bike can work nicely as a trail bike with wider tires and a little wider riser bar. I thought I needed 5 inches of travel but now I am trying to talk myself into getting this 4" travel lightweight bike. They have marked it down pretty far so I am pretty interested. Thoughts?

I am a lone voice crying out in this wilderness, I'm afraid; but I would opt for a little weight penalty to get the extra travel. It will allow you to push the envelope of your riding more and allow you to do things with aplomb that you might otherwise have shied away from.

You can always back off and use less of all those beautiful, forgiving 5" of travel but you can never add travel when you wish you had it.

If all you're ever going to do is trail ride and not really leave the ground you should be OK.......but D is right If you decide you wan't to shred the gnar a little bit you'll be jones'n for a little more bike.

Or you could look at a Rigid,Steel,SS, 29r.....

Uh yeah, which one? Top Fuel? Fuel EX?

Actually, today I looked at the Ibis Mojo SL which is in the same price range'ish. With XT kit. That seems like a good option too. Argh! So many deals to be had right now but I can only choose one.

Get the top fuel EX 9.8, it has more suspension travel.
