I need help. I checked the $500 thread but not quite what i was looking for. I have narrowed my choice to 2 bikes.
Trek 4500 (2004) $420
https://www.trekbikes.com/bikes/2004/mountain/4500.jsp
or
Specialized Rockhopper (2005) $399
https://www.specialized.com/SBCBkModel.jsp?spid=9339&JServSessionIdroot=2d0y36vew4.j27002
Between the two bikes, and factoring in price which one is a better buy. I am leaning towards the Rockhopper, but i read somewhere the forks changed.
So i humbly ask the MTB forums for help.

The fork changed from a Manitou Six to an Axel Comp. That's actually a step-up in their fork line.
I tend to like Specialized bikes more, and the new '05 line has not dissapointed me.
I've never been a big fan of Trek bikes, but that's more due to fit.
Regarding bike fit. This is critical. Ride both bikes and re-ride them several times. Buy the one that feels better.
As far as comparing the two side-by-side. They're pretty much the same. Better fork on this one, better derailleur on that one, blah blah blah.
Go for the better fit and you won't go wrong!
