Opportunity to use your wisdom...do you have what it takes?

What are your thought on a full suspension bike under $1000? I was looking at 2009 Mongoose Otero Super Trail Mountain Bike, any opinions? Not everyone wants to spend $2,500 for a full suspension to have fun...ready...go!

Oh, yes I know opportunity is misspelled it got your attention.

You want to have fun? Then don't get a sub-$1000 full suspension bike. For that money you'll get a really nice hardtail. The Mongoose is a piece of crap for mountain biking. If you just want to ride around campus it will work well but for $1000 you can get a better bike for that purpose.

Read the FAQ at the top of the sub-forum. You'll get all the necessary information.

The Otero doesn't look like a bad bike, but it probably wouldn't be my first choice. $1000 will get you a Giant Yukon FX, a pretty nice full suspension for not a lot of money. Also, Haro offers their entry level Shift for under $1000. And as Santiago said, $1000 will buy a nice hardtail.

I've learned to trust some of the members here, and I've heard some variation of 'don't go sub-$1k on a FS bike' enough to believe it. However, one of the members did say the Jamis Dakar is a great bike and can be had for your price. Take this with a grain of salt, since I don't know what I'm talking about, but perhaps a more experienced rider can comment on this bike.?

Here in Ohio, I noticed many of the LBS have a good number of leftovers out on the floor. Maybe shop around and see if you can find a deal?

Also, keep your eyes out for a decent used bike. If you have the $$, it is a buyers market right now. Let someone else take the depreciation hit and you get a killer bike at a good price.

You can get a decent FS bike for less than 1k. If you get the upgrade bug you can shop around for a better fork and shock.

Check the Dirt Rag, review. They liked it, mostly.

So was 'wisdom.' I like to randomly fix titles because: 1) I can; 2) you can't; 3) it makes us all look a little smarter - - whether we are or not .

If you are talking about this bike:https://www.performancebike.com/bikes...1_20000__61000

there is absolutely nothing wrong with it...very decent package for under $1000. You can also hit Performance for additional 10% off this coming Saturday. If your size is not in stock online, call around to the various Performance stores. Right now they have it on closeout at $699. and then another 10% off...heck the specs on this bike compare very well with the big name bikes in the $1200-1500. level...Tora fork, Rock Shok 2.1 rear, hydro disc brakes, decent Shimano crank...I say grab it.
