20 Stupid (or non stupid) reasons to wear a good helmet while mountain biking.

My friend (a member here) WHO DOES NOT WEAR A HELMET needs a knock in the head. Rest assured I will PM him this thread. Soooooooo.... Let's tell him why.

Reason #1. You got a five dollar head, wear a five dollar helmet.

Reason #2 you don't like your food to have the consistency of mush. Due to losing teeth and the possible broken jaw.

Reason #3. The rescue team needs something shiny to reflect the beam of their flashlights when they are looking for your cold dead body in the woods.

#12 You'll feel better protected with ~1cm of polystyrene on your head and will therefore feel able to take bigger risks.

Because ladies don't like comatose dudes with diaper rash???
It's easier to go all out knowing I can whack my head w/o really worrying much, if absolutely necessary.
I like my head to be more the shape of a grape than a wrinkled raisin.
Brains are for inside my head, not outside.
Because "It looks dorky" or "It feels uncomfortable" is a lame ass excuse.

    Best reason for me:
What I learned from smashing my head on a rock at high & speed cracking the helmet is:
When you fall even on the most mundane surface your body can land in a way where you have NO control over preventing your head from smashing into whatever hard surface is there.
It was incredible! But my head felt so comfy, had no helmet been there my skull would have broke.

Riding MTB, eventually you will fall and you will hit your head.

(Also wear eye protection. You might poke your eye out, kid.)

Cause I can't afford to buy more bike bling if I can't work - and I need my brain (and hand-eye coordination for my job).

#15 Because if you rock the full face + goggles, no one can tell who the hack who keeps crashing is.

Bonus: And when you hit your head, you can get back on the bike and ride away before they come over and figure out who you are!

I don't buy helmets because of Fashion. I buy them when I break them. normally about every 12 to 18months. In 20 years of cycling-I have only been concussed once. That helmet was in 3 pieces on the ground.
How long was I in the army? Five foot seven.

A fall like that can happen when you least expect it too, it doesn't even need to be on a trail..

Few years ago I was riding down my street, and a few kids were kicking a ball around. One of them decided it would be funny to kick it in my general direction, but due to the way the ball bounced (Keep in mind this was an Aussie football - egg-shaped) it rolled under my front wheel. Despite my relatively low speed, I went over the bars and hit my head directly on the corner of a concrete gutter. Had I not been wearing a helmet, that would have done some serious damage.
