Putting 26' wheels on a sort of hybrid frame

Pretty much new to this jazz so excuse any too obvious ignorance.

I've got a giant hybrid, an escape series and I was interested in getting in some trail riding. The bike has a giant xtc mtb frame so I wondered about putting 26' wheels on it? Would there be any major problems with that do you think? I wondered about cyclocross tyres but I think I'd prefer the strength of the 26's.

Thanks
