Question about SS to 1x9

I have an 09' Gary Fisher Rig that I absolutely love. My dept at work is trying to talk me into racing my fat ass this year so I am contemplating converting to 1x9. Stock SS works fine for my riding but not sure how it will be for racing. I have an eccentric BB so if I switch to 1x9 do I end up with a different BB? Only reason I ask is because I am assuming the rear derailleur makes up for the chain tension? I am no mechanic and really don't know a whole lot about this stuff so that is why I am asking. I do have a LBS I am loyal to so I can always ask them but figured I'd ask here too. I am very tempted to just leave it as is, but at 300lbs I'm thinking I could use all the help I can get!

You don't need a new BB to go 1 X 9.
You will need:
-R DER hanger
-R DER
-new chain
-cassette
-new hub or complete wheel.

And potentially some sort of guard n the inside of the chainring to stop chain drop, like an n-gear jump stop.

Actually no worries there. The Rig's crankset comes with an inner guide-plate as well as the outer. Should work fine with a multi-speed rear. It's a double-sided bash-guard that is not really necesarry for single-speed, but which works awesomely for 1X9.
