G$D D$m# part buying addiction!

I started with an honest/honorable goal..restore/refurbish my old Gary Fisher Wahoo with better-than-stock mid-level components on a budget to avoid spending the cost of a new bike.

Well, one thing led to another. I decided to splurge a little extra on the wheels. Found a good deal on decent brakes. Couldn't pass up the SLX crankset at jenson's. So now I am at the just f#ck it....ALL IN point and probably am going to replace every G.D. component on the thing! I mean, you can't very well run an SLX crankset with an altus derailuer/shifter. Thats like putting a Hemi in a dodge neon. Wife won't be happy....but at least I am spreading out the pain. I'm to the point of photoshopping new parts on pics of my frame to see what it will look like....

I shake my first at you bicycle gods! Thou unholiest of masters who eat out my sustenance, rapture my brain, and possess my soul!

Hey, don't blame the gods for your choosing to throw good money after bad.

Much cheaper than actually buying them.

The frame is in good condition. Plus SWMBO would not have been too happy with a new bike purchase. Much easier to sell "I am fixing my old bike because all the parts are worn out."

With a full-retail copy of photoshop?

It might be close.

Dude, I know the feeling.

It's an affliction called GAS.

Gear Aquisition Syndrome. Cruelly, symptoms are only temporarily relieved with purchasing new gear. I recommend trading the Fisher for a rigid single speed, and staying far away from a bike shop or any bike related media on the internet for at least six months.

But you can upgrade an unlimited number of bikes with it - - even ones you don't actually own. Bargain!

I will admit that a fair share of my tax return every year is spent on bike parts, but I hardly ever buy parts any other time of the year. This year is split about half/half on repairs/upgrades. Very, VERY little is going to the HT rebuild (originally a rigid SS project, but I changed my mind when the math got too deep). The house gets a few things, too, as do the chillins....

You just need a good case of recession-itus (and the accompanying symptom of joblessness) to temper that addiction.

I've made a rule that I can only spend money on bike related things if I earn it through bikes, which usually means buying and then fixing and selling. Its built up my tool collection as well.

Stay away from ebay, it's pulled me in and I've gone as far as replacing just about every bolt on the C-dale road bike with ano blue ones.

My last purchase was an ano blu ceramic bearing BB for the KHS, which also has tons of ano blue stuff on it.

My recommendation for your new problem, which I suffer from too, is to find a number in your budget, example $40 every two weeks and that's what you use toward your new addiction.. LOL

I believe someone should post some clip-ons to see what they'd look like on a DH bike.

In 2007 - this bike started out at 29 pounds....

After buying a new part every month and finally blowing about $2000 - its now a 19-pound climbing BEAST:

If I had to do it ALL OVER AGAIN....I WOULD!!!!
