i need help deciding wich bike

helo, i am new to this forum and to mtbing. i am trying to decide wich bike i should buy. this will be my first mtb besides cheap target bikes. i used to ride bmx and then i went to shasta mountain and rented a bike and had a blast riding on the mountain. i am basicaly trieng to decide between a hardtail and a dually. My choices are ,p2 a haro x1, or a big hit spec. the x1 is only 800 bucks with 6 inches of rear wheel travel wich is pretty sweet. then there is the big hit spec. i was looking at the 2004 model And that had the most bang for the buck but wen i went to my local bikeshop the said they could get a 04 but i still have to save for about 3-4 months so they might not have any 04 left to order so the lady showed the specs of the 05 model, the fork had 30mm more of travel that i prolly dont nedd and instead of 880 it was 1000, but that has 8 inch rotors front and back and pretty beefy everything. wen i went there i came to look at the big hit spec but they didnt have any so i looked around for other bikes and before that moment i never really considered a hard tail until i saw that bike, the P2. it had nice tires beffy fram and 8 inche front rotor for 700 bucks. pretty nice. it only had 100mm of travel but the fork is easy to replace. i would prolly get the marzcchi drop off 2. please help or give other bike suggestions, my price range is free-around 1000$

You are used to a bmx background so I would have to say get the Specialized P2.

I could barely follow that, but listen to kona rider. He knows his stuff.

it seems like the p2 would be less towards the style of riding i am used to wich is fr/dh. i dont do like hard core drops and stuff like that but i dont ride xc or trail bikeing.if i got the 130mm of travel fork would the bike do ok in the stuff i want to do? every on on mtbr says the bike is more of a urban/dirtjump bike but would it do good in other things too?

None of the bikes you mention are good for what you intend to do then, you would probably be best of with a Big Hit Comp, Kona Stink Deluxe, Norco VPS, Santa Cruz Bullit.

ya but i dont have 2000$+ for a bike

for the stlye of riding which what i can gather is fr/dh but not completely full, i would go for the big hit spec but if your just starting mtb go for a hardtail and the P.2 is a sick bike and i feel its better to start off with hardtail and move up to fs only to improve your skills

yeah, the p2's geared more towards urban and dj than anything else. but, i have seen a picture on another forum of one built up as a hardtail dh rig. if i remember correctly, the guy had put a jrT on it.

if you wanna get a pretty good do-it-all hardtail that can handle dh, you might want to check out the evil imperial. or even the norco shore hardtail line up (like the sasquatch, rampage or the torrent). one of the guys that rides the jumps i go to rides a .243 with a dc fork on it that looks like it can hold its own for dh.

for fullsuspension, i'd go with what konarider24 suggested.

is it possible to put a trimple clamp fork on the p2? wat would i have to change to make it compattible for a triple clamp fork? i was looking at the z1 drop off triple triple clamp fork and it looks pretty sick. if i put that on there do u think it would do ok for my riding style? another ? is that marzcchi has that fork listed under oem forks, could other people besides bike manufactuers buy the oem forks?

Maelstrom 08-17-04 11:32 AM

Yes it is. Thats a horrible fork. The djer single crown is better.

krazykxrider 08-17-04 12:21 PM

would the kona scrap be better than the p2 for wat i wanna do

Maelstrom 08-17-04 12:55 PM

Similar design and geometry. They won't feel much different from each other.

krazykxrider 08-17-04 04:18 PM

any mor suggestions

FoX Rider 08-17-04 06:59 PM

Yeah the DJ II is better then the Drop Off III

what would you rather get? fullsuspension or hardtail? that'll help others in giving you suggestions.

from your other post though, your needs sound a bit different than this guy’s. you’re looking for a frame that can do a bit of trials (as opposed to trails) and dj’ing, right? if so, mael’s suggestion to look at some of the planet x frames was a good one. you might also want to look at some of the dmr frames (http://www.dmrbikes.com), also some of the norcos might interest you (http://www.norco.com/bikes/2004bikes/) particularly the moment or the two50.
