Do i need a hardtail or dual?

I have recently been looking at getting a new bike now that i have a job and some money coming in (im 17) and i had been looking at getting one of the specialized xc bikes (fsr range) but i can only find two bikes stores which normally have them, they have both suggested coming back in a couple of months since the 05 range is coming out (and i could get an 04 cheaper ; ) ) But after reading some posts on here im not sure whether i should be getting a hardtail instead.

My main use would be Urban riding, stairs, drops up to about 3ft, and some local trails (nothing major) So what do you think i should be looking at...

btw if you have any bike suggestions they would be greatly appreciated (up to AUS$2000) approx US$1500.
