Hey everyone. Those of you with coil rear shocks, do they squeak in cold weather. If not, then mine is probably broken already, for they are squeaking constantly, and I don't want to take a chance. I will go for the waranty, but at the same time, I want a new rear shock. Can any one suggest any? my price range is 20-40 CDN. Anything budget, that won't break.

20-40cdn for a rear shock...not likely...

Squeking could be caused by the spring turning or binding...OR it could be cause at the bushngs which are usually cheap to replace. You should isolate the noise before blaming the shock.

whats the measurments on your rear shock? try to find a RS deluxe. Those are usually pretty cheap.

if you're budget is only $40 CAD then im guessing your bike is an x-mart bike. if this is the case your shock is probably broken and most likely unrepairable. either way you're not going to find anything near that price range.

the 43 pounds, full boinger, and only 300 dollars(Canadian) absolutely SCREAMS crap-mart bike. Is it a Mongoose? Im guessing so, because it threw me the first time i saw one at Wal-Mart, then i looked at it. Your bike, in a word, sucks. Get yourself a Trek 820, or if you absolutely NEED full boinging, go for the Trek Y22. Take your current bike and burn it.

But Im too poor. Plus...I can't get a fudging trek 820 due to my parents stopping. If I was allowed, I would have got a hardrock A1 on sale at our lbs for 399.99 cdn...kinda exp. but better than this. So...r/s deluxe?
Ill try Why are forks so much cheaper than rear shocks in most cases!?

By the way, trekkie, you got a trek 820 for 200 us? over here, our lbs sells em for 370 CDN thats like 300 US. So be happy. I would get a 820 for 200 US no prob.

hooligan, I'm sorry you are already having problems with your department store bike. I would not recommend buying anything that you can't easily transfer over to a new frame; you are going to need one. Buying wheelsets, cranks, front suspension, and better bars make sence, as when you break your new frame you can transfer them over to a better frame down the road.

I know you are young and poor, but it will pay off in the long run to just to save up your money and put it towards a better bike. When I was your age I did odd jobs to earn money. Go mow a neighbors lawn, wash cars etc... you'll have enough money to buy a bike that you will not hurt yourself on. The bike you have is not made to really even ride in the dirt. Sorry but it is true.

Definately. Those kinds of bikes, tragically, are merely a way for greedy corporations to take advantage of unsuspecting and misinformed consumers. I was almost one, but i wisened up a bit and it made a huge difference, even though the price was close to the same, the quality difference is astounding. I would be terrified to ride that bike on a singletrack with even the smallest hint of bumps. I recommend that you sell that bad boy, and save up some cash for a sweet ride! If you think that it can't be done, i got a job when i was 14, and when i was 15, i split the cost of a jet ski with my mom ($3000). I know you can do it, man, just find a good way to raise money, and save up a few hundred, and pretty soon, you will be able to slice the singletrack with the best of em!! Best to do it now while you don't have to pay for a car, trust me!

DEFINE YOUNG PLEASE.if your parents see you constantly having to upgrade or replace stuff they will get the hint after telling you to take it easy or whatever to keep from buying new stuff.when i was in your shoes i would make due with what i had and put up with the squeak till i could save for better stuff.and not all people here ride singletrack like us so the x mart bike can do what its intended to do,look good parked in the school parking rack.most of these type of bikes are designed to appeal to the eye and wallet. you have to look close to see the lack of lastability if you do not know what you are looking for or at.these bikes are like bic shavers,disposable after a few uses but better than nothing.its tough being restricted by your parents budget so i agree with others here if you want better stuff raise the money some LEGAL way.it will mean more to you having earned it too.us parents can testify to the first thing we bought ourselves,it was great,and we want our kids to have the same joy, self confidence and sense of accomplishment we had.nuff of the parent talk,triflow will fix the squeak for under $5us

I put up with x-mart bikes until I started earning my own income. My parents were not big on cycling and were barely even supportive of it. I did however learn to tear apart and rebuild my Huffy and whatnots as best as I could. I replaced cranksets, derailleurs, brakes, bottom brackets and a myriad of other parts with either equally crappy low-end parts from salvaging other low-end bikes or whatever I could afford. I learned how to true wheels and adjust shifting. My bike never rode to my satisfaction and most of the time I had only a fraction of the gears available to shift into but at least I knew what was wrong with it. I also developed an appreciation of at least what a quality bike should not be if not one for what it should. My first ever paycheck went to the purchase of a Specialized Hardrock which was around $300 USD.

Have you checked ebay? there are all kinds of components on there for cheap prices...may not be all you want, but it might be all you need...

The biggest thing to measure is the eye-to-eye measurement...if this is the same as what you've got, it most likely will work...unless it has a piggy-back reservoir, which might not clear your frame...

Despite what all these guys say, ride what you got while you can...be careful and don't overestimate what you and your bike can do...if it is a department store bike, you need to keep in mind that it may not hold up to some of the stuff...learn everything you can about repairing/fixing/adjusting...the more you ride, the more valuable this knowledge will be...nothing sucks like having to go to the LBS for EVERY LITTLE thing...

I started mountain biking on a full-rigid Western Auto...my first ride with friends was horrendous (I am also fat and WAS outta shape)...it weighs 30-some lbs...but it's held up...it had thumb shifters, platform pedals and big,wide cushy seat...when other's saw it, they exclaimed, "you need full-suspension..."

So I listened, bought my 02' Schwinn Mesa DSX...then I heard, "ohhhh...you should spent the extra dough and got a Specialized/Giant/Trek/Fisher...."

Fact of the matter is, there's always gonna be somethin' better...and people are gonna tell you that when they see/hear what you have...

Okay, we've all been down the xmart road. Just, now in our older days, it's a little easier to put down someone else bc of this decision. My advice: Save your money, ride this one until it breaks, and then buy something better.

BTW, my husband rode an xmart Magna on trails for 6 months and dropped all our, LBS, carbon bar, full suspension, a$$es. Although xmart bikes aren't a good investment and can be dangerous if you don't know how to fix things and do maintenance, it's not always about what you ride. It really comes down to how you ride.

Ride it til it breaks, save some money, replace with better bike and drop the naysayers a$$es in the process.

ya my rear shock on my hooligan actually broke in half and that was just from a 3 foot drop anyone got advice for wat i should do?

Err Jordello, this topic is so old, don't even bring it up any more. And I don't ride hooligans. Those are so easy to break and take their advice damn it. Save for a new bike or go buy another rear shock. How hard is that?

Jordello, there isn't that easy a way. Think about it. If it's really broken, you're gonna have to spend money to repair it and this will go on for a long itme, killing your savings. But, if you really want to dent your allowance, go to an LBS and get a new rear shock. However, the shock will out last your bike on the hooligan. They have been known to crack quite often. If you don't wanna die young, get off your hooligan and just save up for a better bike. Or ride with your rear shock broken.
