Best Place to drop Weight
Hey Guys,
I have a Rocky Mountain Vertex 50.
I have changed the brakes to the Shimano XT Disc Brakes w/ Combo Levers
I have changed the saddle to the WTB Rocket V SLT Silver (Titanium Rails)
I have changed the stem to a Deda Quattro
I have changed the pedals to the Crank Brother's Eggbeater SL
I have changed the front derailleur to the Shimano XT
Everything else on the bike is stock. I was wondering what other changes I can / should make to significantly reduce overall weight on the bike while maintaining overall strength / quality.

Unless you're anorexic, the best place to drop weight is yourself.
If you still want to drop weight off the bike, I didn't see wheels mentioned in your list. That's a good way to drop a pound or more right there.

The bike has Mavic Crossride Disc wheels. The wheels are about 2000 grams - 4.4 LB for the PAIR.
From what I've looked at though..it doesn't appear I'll receive much weight savings in the wheels. Maybe better rideability though which could give that impression?
Edit: Some of the higher end wheels offer 1.5LB + savings...

Trade out your bike for a rigid, fixed-gear 29er.

Depending what you have, the cranks and tires can be a good place to lose weight.
And like you mentioned, you can easily lose a pound with a better wheelset.

I hate you, then.
That's what I'm talking about. Even with disc brakes, there are good ways to save weight. Triple butted spokes, lighter rims, lighter hubs (this is a big ticket right here if you can spend the $$$)

For custom built, should I order online and then have the LBS tweak it / perfect it upon arrival? I'm pretty sure I'll still save money that way.

Sorry, I've never owned a bike with disc brakes, so I don't have much opinion on that. I build my own (and others') wheels, and they always seem to last longer than factory combos, so I obviously advocate custom built. I will say that DT makes some very nice disc hubs that I was impressed with on a tandem I piloted for a while. Fairly light and very smooth.

There are several good online wheel builders. You won't need to tweak them when they arrive. Try Larry at Mountain High Cyclery.

Where do you ride this thing?
If you're threading through the Don you can get away with much lighter wheels etc than if you are blasting over the rocks at Hilton Falls.
But like never,my first thought is crankset. Ribble cycles is doing XTR for just over 300CAD, XT for half that.

Custom Hope Pro II wheel build from chainreactioncycles.com will drop a grip of weight, and not cost a ton. I got my most recent set built for less than many places charge for the hubs alone. This included shipping.
Otherwise, when things wear down/out, replace with lighter options. Keep the old wheelset as a back up set to throw some beefier tires on.
