Distance To Trails
How long to you all have to ride/drive/travel to your faviourite trails? I have one or two near me. A trail just opened in a park but it doesnt have any atmosphere and its really short, just for practice really and a little trail near some moorland. To get the really good stuff I'd have to drive an hour, hour and a half. Problem is I don't drive yet and buses and trains are difficult to get to these places. What do you all do? You can't all have amazing singletrack at your doorstep? I guess I'll need get on with leanring to drive faster

It's about 2 hours to Tahoe or two hours to Santa Cruz. Niether are EXTREMELY far, but if I just want to go out for a ride after work, all I've really got is some urban (more like suburban) stuff right nearby. Despite being extremely bike friendly, Davis really isn't the best place for mountain biking.
The nearest decent singletrack is less than an hour away.

I have to drive about 8 miles to Kanawha State Forest here in WV. I could ride there, call me a wimp, but it's all very much uphill on the way back home.
I had to drive about 12-13 miles to any trails when I lived in Tampa.

I ride about 20mins for decent trails. Wish they were closer because I am semi burnt out by the time I get there. Usually do 2 loops and its time to start heading home.

I am about 1.5 hours from three awesome Michigan trails while at school, about an hour from some good Ohio trails in Cleveland

Seems everyones the same. All the best ones around here tend to be in the middle of nowhere, no one wants to live there lol

3 Mile ride to the center of town. Thats where everything is. To the clostest mountain its about 2 hours.

Hi,
There's a "real" MTB park about 20 mins away (by car - Tyler State Park) so I go there about once a week. But there are cool trails all over this little town. The 4-wheelers had seen to that. Those, the fire roads and right of ways are good riding real close to home. There is a huge lake about a mile away with lots of trails (more 4wheelers) that go deep into the woods - very challenging.

1 mile ride to a greenway that connects all the local singletrack trails...probably about 30 miles of singletrack altogether. One trail was voted into the national top ten municipal trails by Bicycling Mag a couple years back.
Proximity to the trails was a big factor in deciding where to buy my house and land. I hate driving to ride.

My slice of east San Francisco Bay has some good options...
- Halfway between home and work (15 minutes from each, by car): Briones Regional Park has lots of fire roads, good scenery, and great wildlife. Some decent poachable singletrack (shhh). It's also got climbs, climbs, and more climbs: every ride I've done there starts and/or ends with a fatty climb. Great place to ride in the evenings, when the temps subside...ride up to the lagoons, sit and watch the fog roll in over the Bay. Smoke 'em if you got 'em! Finish the ride after dark, because trail curfew is not in effect until 10 PM.
- From my front door: ride the mile-long paved bike trail down to the bay, and from there put together a 2-4 mile loop up and down the shore. Mostly flat, a mix of paved/unpaved, along a stretch where they are building more houses. Again, a great place to stop and watch the sunset.
- On the weekends: 30 minutes to Mt. Tamalpais or China Camp State Park. China Camp gets my vote, with all the fast, buffed-out singletrack you need. Again, right on the bay, but with easy climbs. Just rode 10 miles there on Saturday, and was back home by 11 AM. China Camp gets you ready for...
- Camp Tamarancho! In Fairfax, California, 45 minutes from my house. Park in downtown Fairfax and ride 2 miles up the hill to the Camp Tamarancho Boy Scout Camp. An 8.5-mile ALL SINGLETRACK loop built by and for mountain bikers. The required annual membership keeps the riff-raff out (well, almost). Minimal crowds at 0800 on the weekends. From here, link up with any number of classic Marin County trails (Repack, Bolinas Ridge, etc.) to push your ride into the 'epic' category.
- Of course, 3-4 hours from Tahoe, but mostly go there to backpack/fish/play disc golf. Maybe bring the bike next time.
The Bay Area is the shidizzle for mountain biking...I just wish I got into it when I was younger, with more time! Oh well, better late than never.

I live right off the trailhead of the Beaver Lake Trail System affectionally known as The Beav or Section 36. They're not the most awesome trails ever but they'll do for a quick fix. And yes, the jumps and logs and stuff got torn down. 
That also happened at St. Edwards State Park which used to be local to me when I lived a little more north. It's about 10 miles of twisty pointless singletrack that doesn't really go anywhere but it allows me to maintain my skill when I'm too lazy to actually drive somewhere. The closest trails other than that are 10 miles away (as the crow flies) on Tiger Mountain. The only really good way to get there is to drive and take the expressway.
