Trying to decide! HELP!!!

I'm trying to decide on my 1st MTB. I have been looking at eather a Trek 6700 or a Specialized Rockhopper Comp. I'm going to go look at them in person this week (just to see what I think) and then next week take a friend of mine when he gets back from cali working a race. Anyway, I was just wanting to know what you guys and gals thought of these two bikes.

Thanks!
-Jonathan

What are your chosen rides based on? Have you narrowed your search down to these two because you've looked at everything else you were interested in? Please do yourself a favor and look at all options IN PERSON in your price range before getting an opinion. When you ask to test ride the bikes ride them for a good long time (at least until the salesperson lookes pissed and bored) and see how they feel to YOU. It was great fun for me just riding all the different models before I found one that was THE ONE. And it wasn't even close to the bike I thought I'd be getting at first. Honestly, it sounds like your going in to the store with your mind already made up. If you don't like either bike you may end up buying the one you dislike the least, which is no way to go through life

I based my choices off of price range and what parts the bike comes with. However, i agree with you, i want to go to the store and look and see what i can find and what feels good to me. I've looked at Giant, Gary Fisher, Trek, Specialized, and Cannondale. Out of those two, i found what I think i can get the most bang for my buck at, but im open to ideas.

PS: im looking at XC bikes.

Why don't you consider something like a Gary Fisher Tassajara? I got mine used for less than $300, and it has Shimano Deore derailleurs, and Bontrager components, not to mention the Genesis Geometry. I absolutely love mine, and I would definitely take it over a rockhopper. Just a thought.
