How to Convert Front V-Brake to Disc?
 

I bought a 2000 Gary Fisher Wahoo really cheap ($60) a few months ago. I would like to do a number of things to it, & one of those things is convert the front brakes to disc. I would do front & back but I've heard converting the back is very expensive, & I hardly ever use the back brakes so screw that. Now, I understand that I will need new rims & a new fork that are disc brake compatible. This's fine, as the rims are cheap & the fork is rigid so they need replacing anyway. So can anyone tell the/point me in the direction of a tutorial for converting the front end to disc brakes? Also, what sort of price range am I looking at here? If there's already a topic about this, please post a link & begin flaming, but I was unable to find one.

It's not the rims you need to change, it's the hubs. Although it is a common mistake to refer to the whole wheel as a rim, so I assume that's what's happened here.

Does the bike currently have V-Brakes on it? If so, that's pretty easy, as you can use the same lever for most cable disc brakes.

It's relatively straight forward. Install the fork, and the brake rotor on to the hub. Fit the wheel. Bolt the brake caliper onto the tabs or posts of the fork (depending on the style of mount)

Then attach the new brake cable (You'll need a new inner and outer cable) and adjust the brake. There's plenty of tutorials online about how to adjust them.

I actually decided to sell my kayak & bike and get an upgrade, but that website will be useful for when I have a more complex ride to maintain. I started looking into all the things I wanted to do to the bike &, to build a quality bike part by part, I was looking at upwards of $800 in upgrades. I found a good used bike that has everything I want on craigslist for $400, so it wasn't a very hard decision to make (though I really liked my 2000 Gary Fisher Wahoo frame).
