To sell or not to sell...
Back in '98, I was interested in joining a group of coworkers that mountain biked on a regular basis. I went out and purchased a bike but not long after, lost my job and subsequently moved. I never did get to use the bike and it tagged along during multiple moves. I've always felt I might pick up the sport someday as I love the outdoors and my knees prevent me from running. Lately, I've taken up the notion to get a road bike and was wondering if I should sell my MB to offset the cost of the new bike. I looked into some owner reviews of the MB and it seems that many who have owned it, really like the bike. Now I'm not so sure I want to let it go as I (or the hubby) might really enjoy using it someday. It's a 98 Trek 930... https://www.bikepedia.com/QuickBike/B...=930&Type=bike It was just an entry level bike but one of the last Trek made with a steel frame. I'm hoping someone on here can guide me as to whether I'm better off holding onto it or letting it go (and if the latter, how much can I ask for it? It's never been used).

If I were you I'd sell it, since road biking is what you're interested in. And I'm no expert, but if it was mine I would start at $250 & see if you get any offers. If not, go down once a week in $25 increments. Just my two cents.

Considering it retailed for $560 12 years ago, I doubt anyone's going to offer $250 for it. From a monetary standpoint, you might be better off putting street tires on it if you want to road ride or at least trying out mountain biking. Who knows, maybe you'll really like it. What you decide to do all depends on how much it's worth to you though.

I think he could probably get $200-225 considering it's never been ridden & that's only 1/3 of what it was worth new. And anyone who's ever sold anything on craigslist knows that you always start above your actual asking price, because people always try to talk you down. And for the year, it's even got a pretty nice fork on it.

Maybe you're right sam; it'd be worth a shot. On another note, not to nitpick, but I think kkretz77 is likely a lady.

Yeah, the hard part about pricing something (especially in this economy) is that a bike is only worth what the highest bidder will pay for it. So I would start it out high, & if you start to get impatient bring the price down. If no one bites when the price hits your rock bottom lowest price, just hold onto in & put some street tires on it until you can afford a legitimate road bike.

Oh & I guess I should have said "I think they..." rather than "he". Better safe than getting virtually slapped in the face

Trek 930s have nice butted chromoly frames. I loved mine until it got stolen. I would put slicks on it and call it a day. It's cheaper too.
ETA: By the way, would you post a pic of your bike? I love looking at people's bikes. I guess you might call me a bike voyeur.

Well, i am a woman...good call. And I'd love to put a photo of the bike up but I'd first have to pull it up out of the basement and take 3 years of dust off of it. I did go out and buy a bike last week...a local shop had an 09 Avail 1 in my size. Considering the 10 model I was looking at was sold out on both the east and west coast, I went for it. I got it for $1200 so I am happy. Love it so far...though I think I'd love it more if I invested in some bike shorts :O) I'll probably list the 930 on Craigslist and see what happens. If no one bites, I'll probably keep it for the hubby...one of his friends mountain bikes. Who knows, maybe he'll take up the sport :O)
