Looking to get into mountain biking

I'm really looking into getting serious about mountain biking and buying my first real bike.

i'm in college right now, so i don't have a ton of money, but i was thinking the $300-500 range probably wouldn't be terrible for a starting bike.

I've looked a few gary fishers and treks...

any suggestions?

I'll tell you the same thing I've told a dozen other people--Specialized Hardrock Sport Disc is the best bang for your buck. $550 new. Has best drivetrain for the money, double-wall rims, Avid BB5 disc brakes, fork with lockout, & the lightest frame in the price range. The Felt 520 is also a nice bike. A little heavier but other than that a solid bike. I really like Gary Fisher but I've never thought that his low-end stuff was worth the money. If you're dead seat on being that cool guy with a GF though, the Wahoo is a solid bike. If you want disc brakes in the same price range, the Advance Disc would match your price range. I know the Wahoo is a solid bike but still don't know much about the Advance.

Also don't mind junkyard. He hasn't been promoted to mod yet so he can't really do anything but talk.

Hard to suggest, because we'd all just either suggest what we know or what we're familiar with. FWIW, I prefer Gary Fisher's G2 geometry over most of the Trek's that I've ridden. I like the longer top-tube on the Gary Fisher, in part because it lets me run a shorter stem. I run a 60mm stem w/riser bars on my Gary Fisher Hifi, and that's very confidence inspiring on downhills and in sketchy sections.

Looking at prices, you can get a Gary Fisher Wahoo for $549. You can also get a Trek 4300 for that same price. I realize that's pushing your budget a tad.

I think you can get a good bike on CraigsList for that money. Test Ride it and check all the welds and rims closely.

Junkyard got nominated for King or something, he likes to banish people. He has an appointment to get some meds.
