I built my bike, a KHS comp myself on a shoestring budget out of some bits of an old bike I had and some new bits. It only has a threaded headset which is sealed but I was wondering if it is worth getting a threadless headset and whether it actually performs better in any way other than looking better compared to threaded.

    My answer to your question...

The biggest difference between threaded and threadless is weight and then strength.

Because *most* threadless steer tubes are aluminum and they are lighter. Generally, an inch and an eight is stronger than the same tube in Cro-Mo, given the wall thickness is a factor.

An aluminum tube can withstand the same strength parameters as Cro-Mo with a substantally thinner wall thickness. The strength of an aluminum tube is calculated proportunally with the diameter of the tube. Therfore, as in the case of Cannondales, the larger the diameter the stronger the tube. In comes the weight savings, one can maintain the same strength with a thin wall tube by increasing its' diameter.

The same is not true with steel mixes, steel is all about wall thicknesses.

    So, in a concise manner:

The feel of steel is real. Alu is strong like a mule.

In a steer tube I want strength, fortunately this also means saving weight in the front of the bike (one of the most important diferences in the *feel* of a bike).

Well, that is about the extent of my opinion.
    Good Luck,
    Arjai

    I myself prefer threadless.

    That's just mean.
I may be fat but I'm slow enough to make up for it.
